By M. Bass
I had one of these installed in my house in 2008, and I wish I hadn't spent the money. It has never made any noticeable difference in the air quality in my home, and worse, it has broken down twice. The first time the motor dies, it was within warranty, so at least the part was free (though I had to pay for the labor to have installed, of course). And now I've discovered that the motor has died AGAIN, and I don't know what it's going to cost me. Total garbage. Avoid it!

By Neil Rasmussen
I have three of these units in two different houses. They are used to protect finished basements from humidity. Without dehumidifiers I would get mildew in carpets and furniture. Before using the Aprilaire 1750 units I used typical portable dehumidifiers. They were very loud and frequently failed. Also in one of my homes a section of the basement is unheated so it requires dehumidification even when the temp is around 50 degrees, which typical portable dehumidifiers don't do well. I have one unit unducted and two are ducted.I also have another building with a Santa-Fe unit in it; this unit works OK but seems a lot louder.Note that with a unit like this it makes a lot of water and does not have a water container so you will need a condensate ejector pump like those made by Little Giant (available on Amazon) unless the unit is above grade (or you have some other place for water to drain). Installing the condensate pump is most of the installation work. It is important to use a condensate ejector pump WITH a safety overflow switch and connect the safety switch back to stop the dehumidifier. Otherwise you can end up with a flood if something goes wrong with the pump or drain. The three Aprilaire units have worked very well with no failures. I really like that they are MUCH quieter than any portable units I have ever heard. The units turn on and sample the air every now and then so they don't need a remote humidistat. I typically set them to give me about 45% humidity which prevents mildew and keeps the air very comfortable.
