4best toaster oven I've ever had
By Emmett Hines
I like quality equipment but I'm a cheapskate too. So I purchased the "used" unit from the "factory reconditioned" page (as I understand it this means it was returned to the factory, reconditioned, offered at $115, purchased by someone, then returned again, then offered again as "used" at $102 (condition indicated as "Used - Like New") and finally sold to me. Hey, I've been doing Amazon business long enough to know that even this far down the ownership chain, I'm risking nearly nothing as long as it is fulfilled by Amazon. It arrived in less than 48 hours (thanx Amazon Prime!) in a pristine plain cardboard box sporting a "factory reconditioned" sticker. However there is nothing else about this unit or its packaging that would indicate it was anything but brand-spankin' new. It appears all original packaging was still intact and in place (foam inserts, polybag, parts, tape still holding the door closed, twist tie around the cord - I'm clearly the first to untwist it). No scratches, dents, chips or discolorations. The manual showed no sign of ever having been opened. The manual indicates that the first run will give off the smell of manufacturing residue cooking off. This was evident (on the first run only). All controls and indicators appear to operate in accordance with the manual.Usage notes:1) The preheat portion of the cycle is too short - set at 425* the preheat ends when the temp was just 335* (verified by two separate, calibrated thermometers). The oven continued to heat up to 425* (took a full 2:15 additional time) then held rock-steady at 425* throughout the cycle. Several pre-heat cycle tests show the same behavior consistently. (My experience with many ovens, even high-end units like Thermador, DCS and Wolf, tells me that ALL manufacturers understate true preheat times - perhaps under marketing pressure - and that ANY oven needs to be preheated beyond what the the built-in indicator says.)2) Especially in view of #1 above, I wish the timer would not go immediately into countdown but, rather, wait until I tell it to countdown.3) The display is designed to be viewed straight on. If you look at it from a point much above the unit you cannot see what's on the display - you must stoop down. Since most people likely put this unit on a counter, I consider this a definite design flaw (at least for users more than 5 ft tall).4) My first trial cook was toasting 4 slices of whole wheat & oat bread. I noted that the glass soon fogged enough so I couldn't see how my toast was doing - but after a while it cleared. I do like the countdown timer during the toast cycle. All four slices were evenly toasted on top but, on the bottom the relatively thick bars of the rack left rather wide, less-/un-toasted stripes on the bottom of all 4 slices - not a major issue, but not quite what I expected.5) Toasting a second batch: the oven automatically chose a shorter toast time and accurately toasted the top side of the bread to the same brownness. But I found that the bottoms of all 4 slices were underdone compared to the tops. Curiously, in a later test of the same 2-batch process the bottoms were not underdone - so the jury is still out on this.6) Toasting bagels using the bagel setting seemed to work flawlessly - though my personal tastes run toward wanting both sides of the bagel toasted so, as the instructions suggest, I'll likely use the toast setting for bagels too.7) The manual calls for a minimum of 4 inches clearance on either side of the unit. In my kitchen that simply isn't going to happen. I've got more like 2 inches on each side and this seemed to be sufficient as neither of the items on either side of the oven (a coffee maker and a cabinet side) got any more than slightly warm to the touch even after several hours of full-blast oven use.I'm counting off one star on the rating for reasons stated above (to me 5 stars means I can't find room for improvement) - but, so far this looks like it will shape up as the best toaster oven I've ever had. That's all for now. - I'll update later with more experience.==============================Update....April 2012So I've had the unit for about 9 months and it still works the way it did on day 1.I have found that for some breads, especially thick-sliced breads, toasting time is well underestimated and that it is necessary to tweak the toasting time - easily accomplished by a quick twist of the lower control knob - but once you have done this a couple times for any particular bread you can pretty accurately make the adjustment at the beginning of the toasting cycle.I have also determined that keeping the crumbs tray clean helps with underside doneness in toasting - because the tray serves to reflect infrared heat from the bottom coils back up to the bread - and every bit of crap on the tray reduces the amount of energy reflected. So far...still the best toaster oven I've ever owned.

1Much more than minor cosmetic issues and still had food stains!
By martmann
I was convinced to save some money on this "re-certified" oven, after reading the reviews. I have saved money on refurbs before, on lots of things. For those that got "Like-New" units, that is awesome for you. I got one with bad finish defects all over, looks like something black touched the finish when it was hot, and got burned on, all over the thing. Also many small dents and scratches. It was also pretty dirty, to include crumbs still stuck to the grate, and food stains on the front. The stains looked like they could be cleaned off, but I shouldn't have to, and it shows that it wasn't cleaned in the "Re-certification Process". It had a small sticker on the bottom that said"Cleaned by: SC / Tested by AD" it clearly had not been cleaned, makes me doubt it was thoroughly tested.I returned mine, and am buying a new one.I will never buy a Breville refurb again, this thing is nasty, and SOOOOO not worth the savings.EDIT many months later April 17th, 2012:I did buy a NEW version of this unit right after writing the review above, and it is an awesome Toaster Oven, but I will not take a chance on any Breville refurb/recert. It does look like many recieved good recertified units, so if you don't mind taking a chance on having to return it, go for this.I wish I had just bought new to begin with, as returning this was a pain.

5Love love love
By Alex626
I was little hesitant to buy this item from the reviews, but I figured I could always send it back if I got a bad one. Luckily I received the item in perfect condition. I replaced my toaster and toaster oven with this bad boy. It works as well as everyone claims a breville does. The toast does come out a bit lighter on the bottom side but since the center of the bread still stays moist it is the best toast I've ever made. I didn't really realize you could make better toast but you can. I made the kids a totinos pizza and it was way better than it comes out of my regular oven, the bottom was actually crispy. We made brownies (which I've never done in a toaster oven) and they were once again perfectly cooked. Just be sure you are moving the rack to the position it recommends and you'll be good to go. Now i'm off to find other things to cook in it :)
