Good overall wine cellar
By Midwestdude
Overall, this is a good to excellent wine cellar that I would buy again and recommend to a friend.I have had this for about 3 days. It keeps a pretty consistent temperature in the two compartments (+/- 2 degrees in each compartment) based on a cheap thermometer I put in there. The noise is acceptable; the sound of it coming on reminds me of an aquarium pump (its about as loud as the conventional refrigerator). Capacity of 40 is probably overstated. I can get 36 using all the slots and I have a bunch of bottles of pinot noir and gewurztraminer. I can say that Haier brand refrigerators scored well in Consumer reports although the list of units tested in that literature is limited. They looked at power consumption in that assessment, and this unit was favorably rated in that respect. The temperature display shows CURRENT temp from what I can tell (this was an issue with some other brands where it only shows what the temperature SETTING is). The light goes on when opening the door; you can push the button to keep it on even when closed. The door seems well made with dual pane and some kind of anti-glare (UV?) coating. My main criticism of this unit is the temperature ranges of the individual levels. Most other models I have seen have the smaller, upper compartment as the cooler one (whites) and the lower one warmer (reds). That is reversed here. My collection is definitely weighted in red and I only have a small white/rose collection that has high turnover. The upper compartment has a range of 46-65 and I want 45 degrees. That being said, I have had the upper level set to 45 for whites and lower to 55 for reds, and it seems to have maintained that for at least a day with no problem (my place has an ambient temp of about 65-68). I am somewhat concerned that pushing the upper compartment to its limits on cooling might wear on the hardware but after stabilization, it seems to be holding ok and isnt coming on very frequently. I might elect to bump the temp up to 47-48 if this becomes an issue (sparkling stuff is in the conventional refrigerator). The main point of this unit is to keep my reds at the right temperature anyway. Construction overall seems solid where it counts (door seals and motor, etc.) but the plastic hinge cover fell off when I opened the packaging and seems a bit cheap. It is a bit annoying to need to open the door to access controls, but I imagine that this does help with cost and making the unit more durable.Finding that Haier cellars seem to have really good consumer reviews overall, this seemed like a bargain at under $500, particularly with the shipping included. I just couldnt get myself to spring for the high price of a Eurocave, and other brands for this price seem to have issues with noise among other things. If you are like me and need something to help you cellar your heavy reds and attain serving temperatures for your other wines, this cellar will get you there without spending alot of money. I cant see how a more expensive unit/brand would offer any more value other than increased capacity; I think this unit attains temperature control that isnt significantly less optimal than more expensive units out there. The warranty is 1 year for parts and labor; 5 years for sealant. I think some of the more expensive brands out there go to 5 years for everything; just something to think about since I am rating this only 3 days in.
