Cold and Quiet
By Wise
Was looking for a portable AC but found the EER ratings were not regulated on portable ACs - and thus bogus. Every Tech I spoke with would go with a window unit over a portable when it comes to efficiency.Did alot of research; I needed a quiet AC, since it was going in a window in a small bedroom. While this unit was alot more costly than other units of the same size, I found it well made.My only gripes are the cheap screws provided ... which I replaced with stainless. The instructions were so busy telling you what not to do - I found them confusing and almost useless. The color is more of a vary light grey - much lighter then in the pictures ... and looks great with my white walls. While a little on the pricey side ... I find the cold air and extremely quiet unit, to be exactly ... what I was looking for.

Very high quality with lots of nice features
By Joshua LaPorte
I bought this unit to cool the bedroom in my apartment, replacing a 10 year old LG low profile unit which worked very well but had become increasingly noisy. I've purchased two Frigidaire window units over the past couple of years and have been very happy with them aside from their high noise level. I really wanted a sturdy, quiet unit for the bedroom. I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing an air conditioner via Amazon but it was delivered in perfect condition right on schedule. Amazon had a very reasonable price and saved me some schlepping around to order and then pick up the unit. This Friedrich KUHL is the current iteration of the Q-chassis Friedrich line; I had an X Star (the predecessor to the Kuhl and in the identical cabinet), a larger unit (Quietmaster?), and an unusual small, long unit designed for narrow windows in a prior apartment and was very happy with all of them.Onto the Kuhl:Installation was easy, or at least as easy as any other slide-out chassis model I've ever had; I strongly prefer removable chassis air conditioners to eliminate the precarious balancing of an 80 pound ac in the window during installation. With this type of AC, you slide out the guts, put the light-weight outer cabinet into the window, secure it with screws, and then slide the works back in. Much better, but slightly more time consuming. Friedrich sends you a lot more screws than you need. Just follow the directions and you'll be fine.Initial setup was ok. The controls are rather confusing and I had to spend some time with the manual to figure everything out. I found the older Friedrich units much more intuitive, and the other ACs in my home are also much easier to use. It appears to get customized fully programmed operation (adjust the temperature for different times of day) you need to hook the AC to a computer. Annoying. Even just setting timed on and off times is really far too complicated for regular adjustment. The basic functions are fine.Oddly, this machine seems to lack a fresh-air vent or exhaust feature. I believe that my X Star unit had BOTH of these. I don't use the fresh air feature very often but like to have it. Very annoying to not have it on such an expensive machine. The unit runs well. The fan is much quieter than I'm accustomed to while still moving lots of air. The compressor is somewhat loud, and seems to send vibrations into the window frame making the unit seem noisier than it actually is (you can feel the vibration). Overall, it is a very quiet unit but certainly not silent.Cooling is superb. The Kuhl costs a LOT more than equivalent window units but a lot less than a mini-split AC. The unit I received looked very neatly assembled with high quality materials. It is easily 50% heavier than most small window units. I believe that this is the only window unit on the market which is really built like they were 20 years ago. I appreciate the quality and I hope the unit will last. Sadly, it is no longer made in the USA, (which, at this price point, I believe it should) but they seem to have maintained the quality standards.A couple of other comments: This AC comes in fully recyclable packaging; no styrofoam, all cardboard. I like that. Also, the cabinet is better designed than most to keep stuff out of the cabinet (leaves, debris, etc.) than many others.EDITED 7/18/13This machine has become much noisier! The rather heavy vibration noise from the compressor, which I noted in my initial review, has started reverberating in the outer cabinet of the AC making quite a cacophony of noise. I have verified that the machine is installed correctly and am trying to figure out how to quiet this down. If I go outside and press the sides of the cabinet the noise stops, but will quickly return. It is not constant; the rattling vibration noise will go for 15 seconds to 2 minutes, then smooth back out, then return. More annoyingly, sometimes the noise will cycle rapidly. I hope slipping some more foam between the chassis and the cabinet may help to alleviate this problem. The AC was very nice for sleeping when new, it took a week or two to develop this noise. It will periodically smooth out for long periods of time.I dropped the review to three stars based on this noise issue.EDITED 8/3/13Whatever was causing the noise has corrected itself. This unit is now reasonably quiet again and has been for a couple of weeks. I added the 4th star back to my rating. Nice feature, different from competitors, is that the unit seems to have a VERY accurate thermostat and seems to be able to sense the temperature of the room without running the fan to check. My Frigidaire ACs, when cooling has stopped, cycle the fan every few minutes to sample the air and see if it needs more cooling. The Friedrich just seems to stay silent and will turn on its fan only when it actually needs to cool. The fan hums on, the compressor kicks in, the unit cools the air, and then shuts down the compressor and then the fan. It then stays off until the room needs cooling.

I choose this product because it used low energy and delivered optimal service. I put it on low and the entire room was freezing cold.No noise, it is a very quiet unit.
