Good anti-allergen system, well designed vacuum pod, but has a couple drawbacks
By Danny Yu
This Verilux Cleanwave Sanitizing Bagless Vacuum is one of the first vacuums with a cleaning head that has a sanitizing light that cleans germs and allergens. I'm impressed with the quality of the vacuum's build, the light's germ killing power, and the well designed vacuum pod. However, there are a couple drawbacks that I will address later in this review.Vacuum's build, parts, and features* Made with quality parts: The tube is a flexible but strong material, the retractable tube that connects with the cleaning head is metal, and the vacuum pod is made of hard plastic, but still feels sturdy.* Comes with Vacuum sanitizing power head, telescoping wand, crevice tool, dusting brush, and upholstery tool.* On the sanitizing power head, there is a spin brush that can be used for carpets and rugs.UV Light* Verilux has stated that under certain conditions in laboratories, they have been able to kill bed bugs, dust mites, influenza A, MRSA, HN1, and a host of bacteria. I cannot comment on bed begs and the viruses, but the smell of my kitchen and around the house is refresher. We have two cats, and four dogs roaming around the house, so there are lots of dead skin cells, bacteria, and odor wandering around. After vacuuming, our hardwood floor feels cleaner, without having to mop it.* The UV Light, to the best of my knowledge, lives up to its name.Vacuum Pod* I love the bagless feature. Basically, there's a button to press and the lid opens up and garbage goes out. There is a cone that is removable, which serves as an extra filter for the Vacuum.* The vacuum's suction power has a dial so you can adjust the suction power accordingly. The suction power isn't that impressive, but it's still enough at the highest setting.* There are two Hepa filters on the vacuum pod. One for the bagless canister, and one on the vacuum pod, located where heat exits and the motor is located. It's great for preventing any allergens from going back into the air.* The retractable cord is 20 feet.General performance: With the sanitizing power head and the anti-allergen system, it's good for sanitizing and cleaning big open spaces. For tigher spaces and corners, you may use the telescoping wand, but it will not be sanitized with the UV light.Drawbacks:* For a sanitizing vacuum, I was surprised a smaller UV light was not incorporated to clean smaller and tight spaces that the power head cannot fit into. Since Verilux had already made a sanitizing wand, adding one to this vacuum would have made this vacuum a complete cleaning system. It felt odd not being able to sanitize hard to reach places.* The brush on the power head is not detachable. Though the power head's brush is powerful, human hair, dog hair, cat hair, all gets trapped in the brush. An otherwise impressive brush is now sadly underused since it's not removable, thus making it very difficult to clean.I really like this vacuum and the innovative approach of blending a UV sanitizing light with vacuuming. But, there are some areas that could be improved, like the power head's brush and the oddity of not being able to sanitize hard to reach places. Still, don't be discouraged from taking a serious look at this Sanitizing Bagless Vacuum. It's great for pet owners, environments that need constant disinfecting, or anyone needing the peace of mind that germs and viruses are killed.

Excellent vacuum, not sure if it really sanitizes
By The Taminator
We have a cream point Himalayan cat, and are expecting a German shepherd puppy this week. We shed enough of our own hair as well, plus track in dirt and dust like anyone else, so our house was a great place to put this vacuum to the test. This is the first high-end vacuum I've had, and it's been a great help around the house. It looks and feels like a vacuum of the future. It's a pleasure to use, but it does have a couple of problems. The Verilux brand is new to me even though the style isn't. I used my mother's vacuum with a separate canister for years before moving out on my own. One of the biggest advantages of this style is that the main vacuum head is so lightweight and small. It's so lightweight, in fact, that I wondered about suction power. That hasn't been a problem at all, and it picks up just as much dirt as a regular model. The small, thin head goes places an upright simply can't. This head goes all the way back, completely level with the floor, so it will fit under a lot of furniture. It goes from carpet to hard flooring and back with no problem at all. All the attachments work beautifully and were easy to use. You do have to turn the head and canister on separately. The power cord is very short at about 20 feet long. Our rooms are not that big, and I have to move the plug for every room. If you have large rooms/a larger home, you'll either have to get an extension cord or get used to moving the plug around a lot. I don't understand why the cord is so short, or why there is no on board storage for the attachments. There will come a point where the attachments are lost or simply forgotten. When I want to do corners and hard to reach areas, I have to go to the closet. I feel that these are minor inconveniences considering the vacuum's overall performance, but some may have less patience for this sort of thing. The vacuum clogged on the fourth or fifth use over a 1500 square foot home. It turns out this thing does NOT like rubber bands. The most irritating part of it was that the sound barely changed to let me know that it was clogged-- the only way I could tell was there was no debris swirling around in the canister, and it was still picking up cat hair. I can see this thing overheating if you're not paying attention. When taken apart, it was difficult to tell where the problem was. We eventually used the plastic piece from a Drano Snake Plus kit to dig a very stubborn hairball entangled in a rubber band. It was in the area where the hose attaches to the canister. I've uploaded a photo so you can get an idea of what we were dealing with. There is a plastic cone filter in the canister that you must remove to clean. It's simple when you figure out that you just squeeze it a little and turn it counterclockwise to remove it. The problem is that the manual doesn't explain that-- or else doesn't make it clear. I spent quite a bit of time frustrated as I squeezed and pulled without turning. The HEPA-12 exhaust filter on the back of the canister must sit at an angle, not flat, to close the lid. This is also not explained anywhere and it took some maneuvering to get it right. Once you get removal and replacement correct, it's very easy to get the filters out to clean and change them.My biggest question was, does it really kill bugs, bacteria and germs? I suppose there's no way for me to know for sure without a microscope. The attachments do not have a UV light on them, so the only way to kill anything with this is with the vacuum head (or I suppose you could try whacking it with the wand, LOL). I don't recommend handling the head roughly, because the light is one of those new bulbs that needs special handling if you break it. It would be difficult enough to clean up a broken bulb on a hard floor; I don't know how you would get it out of carpet. That is one part I don't like it. I vacuum every day, and I haven't noticed a change in odors, good or bad. The instructions say you have to use the light to kill germs and so on, but it doesn't say how long to expose surfaces to the sanitizing light to get the effect. The bottom line is that I have floors that look clean, but I really don't know if I've killed or sanitized anything. It picks up enough dirt and is so lightweight that it's an overall five star vacuum, and I would heartily recommend it. My only caveat is that I cannot confirm or deny that it does *everything* the manufacturer claims.UPDATE 05/19/2012 I have to update this vacuum and reduce the rating to three stars. Either I have exceptionally dirty floors, or this thing is prone to hair/dust clogs. Did I say prone to clogs? I meant the hose clogs every single time I use it, sometimes before I even get halfway through the house. My husband has developed a method of swirling the hose around his head to get the hairballs out, kind of like Wonder Woman uses her magic lasso. The hairballs get stuck in the middle of the hose every time, in a place that is difficult if not impossible to reach with any sort of probe. When it's clear, I love this lightweight vacuum, but it clogs way too much for me to keep a five star rating on it.

Honestly, I was expecting more than what I got
By R.Suarez
After using a BISSELL Healthy Home Upright Vacuum for a little over two years now, when I was offered the opportunity to review this I did not hesitate; what really got my attention was not the vacuum itself as the one we have still performs great, but the sanitizing features in this one. I was immediately interested in that particular feature. For starters, I was expecting the power of a good vacuum and the sanitizing features in a convenient device as advertised. Let me just say that I will not give away our old Bissell as I had planned after using this. The vacuum is not as powerful as my old one, something that really surprised me based on the price difference between these two. At the price the Verilux is being sold I would have expected it to be more efficient than a $100+ dollar vacuum and it seems to be the opposite way (after several tests that does seem to be the case)Secondly, the design. In my opinion, bulky and really impractical (see the pics I added) While I will admit the Verilux vacuum head is small and practical to carry, I cannot say the same thing about the hose, the extension and the sanitizing head, it is quite a pain to carry it around given the length of the hose and its attachments. Now, are those attachments optional (after all it is called an extension for a reason)? The answer sadly, is no. I have included some pictures that show the connections you have to make, from the handle to the extension and then to the sanitizing head. I tried to not use the extension as the connections seemed to be compatible, and they were as they fit correctly, however, once I turned the vacuum on, nothing happened! Apparently, the extension must be connected otherwise the sanitizing head will not work! If this is supposed to work as I tried it, I may have gotten a defective unit, but since the very poorly written and lacking of enough information manual does not state anywhere such thing is possible, I am assuming it is not.The brush and the button that activates it from the handle are another thing I encountered problems with. While trying to sanitize a mattress (a quite difficult task I will give more details on shortly), I accidentally turned on the brush as there is not safety button to prevent it to be enabled when you do not need it (room for enhancement there) the result? A couple holes that damaged the mattress I was trying to sanitize (I added some pics to show what this did) The brush is quite powerful indeed so while I accidentally turned it on and removed it immediately, it made a lot of damage so I can definitely encourage you not to use the brush on a mattress, again, information that would have been nice to have in the manual. Now onto the sanitizing features. As other reviewers have stated, this is theoretical and there is no way to know if it is in fact working. Pretty much a leap of faith. It is not that I don't trust the manufacturer or anything but honestly, one of the manuals included asks this question "How do I know the sanitizing head is working?" and the answer formulates on the fact that some bacteria and bedbugs smell, so, if you happen to have some of the smelly ones, the smell should be gone after you use the sanitizer. Additionally, for the sanitizing light to work, the head must be in contact with a plain area, otherwise, the light will not work. There is a blue button in the head that is on when the sanitizing UV light is working, well, when I tried to sanitize the damaged mattress the light would be on and off constantly as the surface was uneven. I tried to sanitize the coach in our living room and I just could not because of this.So in the end, I do believe there is a lot of room for enhancement on this product, honestly, I was expecting more than what I got. After all these problem I decided not to use it anymore and keep using my old vacuum to clean the mattresses and then spray them with those anti-bedbug sprays you can buy at a convenience store.Extremely disappointed
