Good Grinder and mostly what I wanted.

I purchased this grinder from the local Indian store and not from Amazon, who was also ready to provide 1 year of support for free.I did take the grinder to the store to fix the jamed motor 2 times in a year which was fixed quickly, but I think we use it too much.We use it like 2 times a week, yes we eat Dosas and Idlies atleast 3 times a week.Overall, I am happy with the unit it works well.Update:The grinder grinded to a halt, quite literally. the product was out of its 1 year warranty so I thought, I will try to fix it before throwing it away and buy a new one.Opening the grinder was not difficult and spend some time analyzing it. Then I realized that the air dampener which is at the bottom of the motor was touching the bottom cover and so it was jamming the motor.On further investigation, I realized that the body of the grinder is not very sturdy and the weight of the batter etc has deformed it and hence lowered the motor to touch the bottom cover.With little more dismantleing and some hammering I fixed the problem for time being but I am sure the problem will resurface again.After reassembling the motor and grinder, I could not figure out where this extra screw goes into? darn!

We got this grinder as a gift from my mother in law. She brought it here from India in 2006. The grinder worked really well for the first few years. There was only one issue. The dough sometimes seeps through the center shaft to the motor base bringing with it a little bit of oil/grease used to lubricate the stainless steel drum turning parts. It can grind almost dry (for methu vada) or wet as in dosha or idli dough. The stainless steel drum can be easily removed and cleaned.It stopped working today. The motor is functioning. The upper shaft does not turn. On turning the upper shaft several times while the motor was turned on, it worked again. Perhaps, it is in its final stages of dying.Overall good grinder at a reasonable price. If the quality control is the same across its assembly line, it will perform for at least 4 years.Hope this helps.USAUpdate on August 2012:After the grinder stopped working, I called the rep in USA and he suggested opening up the grinder base and use WD40 to remove any rust in the moving parts. After doing that, it started working again. So, far no issues.

Fast Little Wet Grinder

I have used Ultra grinder, Prethi Wet grinder in the past. After a short trip to India suddenly the Indian store idli rava didnt seem right so I made this purchase from the local Indian grocery store. I bought it cos of the compact size. It fits right under the kitchen cabinet. I have been used to 2 Liter grinders & this is my 1.5 liter purchase but the timing is fast. Urid dal grinds in 10 minutes & the Idli rice grinds in 12-15 minutes - Dal & rice were soaked over night. Both my Ultra & Prethi used to take 20-25 minutes resp for this task. Only one complaint though - the machine gets heated up quickly. the heating did not spoil the quality of the batter, but the bottom half is warm to touch. I didnt bother much cos I was able to fully grind the urid dal batch & gave a break before the rice.The machine holds & works well with 2.5 cups of rice.Small drum size is easy to clean in the compartmentalized kitchen sink.Grinder stones are also very easy to carry by a 3 year old.
