5Great BIG microwave, not for the simple-minded
By Mom of 2 boys

S:The "TrueCook Plus" gimmick seems a little silly, but I've never used it. There's a website with a list of the foods that use TCP, but in the grocery store I never see the TCP symbol. If you cook all your meals from frozen dinners in the microwave, this might have some value, but as of April 2011 there just aren't that many foods using TCP.It has way too many buttons: The Quick Touch sensor, alone, has separate buttons for cooking: potato, rice, popcorn, fresh vegetable, frozen vegetable, and frozen entree, as well as a quick touch "reheat" button which can reheat either 1) a dinner plate, 2) soup/sauce, or 3) casserole. (WHERE'S THE REHEAT BUTTON FOR PIZZA????) The key is, you don't have to enter a time or power, the microwave figures it out based on the sensor. I always have to refer to the manual to do it, but so far it has worked very well for cooking rice, cooking potatoes, reheating a casserole in a bowl, and reheating soup. The downside is, while using the sensor, it doesn't give you a time for how long it will take. The screen just displays something like, "Potato" or "casserole".As if that weren't enough, the "Auto Cook" button has a menu of 6 options it will cook automatically: Bacon, frozen roll/muffin, fresh roll/muffin, beverage, chicken pieces, and hot cereal. Confusing, because the microwave refers to them by number, not name-- but a cheat sheet inside the door shows which number corresponds to your food. I haven't used the auto cook option. Chicken pieces? Please! But wait! There's more! "Quick defrost" thaws a pound of ground beef quickly. But only 1 pound. "Auto defrost" can thaw 1) meat, or 2) poultry, or 3) fish. Then there's the "Melt" button, which will melt 1) butter, 2)chocolate, 3) cheese, or 4) marshmallows. The "Soften" button will soften 1) butter, 2) ice cream, 3)cream cheese, or 4) frozen juice. For any of these options, you have to choose the appropriate number that matches your food. Refer to the cheat sheet inside the door.BASICS:You can ignore all the fancy buttons and just cook based on time and power. Just like any other microwave, but with a little more oomph from 1100 watts. It is powerful--- and will heat up quicker than you expected. The interior back of the microwave is a lovely cylindrical shape-- no corners to clean out! Cleaning messes is a cinch, just wipe around the interior in one swipe. I LOVE that feature! And very spacious, if you want to cook something huge. The stainless steel exterior wouldn't be my first choice, as it is prone to fingerprints.Be sure you pull the plastic off the entire outside of the microwave. It is a pain to get off, but if you don't, it will melt your insides-- they say it will make the microwave malfunction. So far it has been a very powerful microwave, and we are pleased with the purchase.

1Two defective units
By Jason Taverner
I REALLY hate reviews that slam a product because the consumer happened to get a defective unit. Nothing is perfect, especially mass produced appliances. Now, having said that, I'm going to give this microwave 1 star.I bought this microwave at a local big box store, and it was defective. There was a loud buzzing noise, and it looked as though one of the screws on the back of the microwave near the vent was sparking. Uh oh! That doesn't sound safe!We took the microwave back to the big box store, and they didn't have any in stock for an exchange. Well, I really liked the features of this microwave so I was willing to drive to another location to get another one. When I plugged this new unit in, the fan, light and turntable powered up on it's own. I could enter a cooking time, and it would count down, but once it got to zero, the fan and light and turntable stayed on. I didn't test if it was actually microwaving or not. I called LG to make sure I wasn't missing an obvious step in setup, but they confirmed that it was defective.Like I said, I think it is unfair when people give damning reviews of items simply because they got a defective unit. If someone gets two in a row (from different shipments, and with two different issues) that are defective, all bets are off.So, I am either one unlucky bastard, or LG quality control on this model is severely lacking. As an aside, I offered the big box store the chance to do another exchange instead of a refund if they would provide a discount for the trouble, but they declined. I am more than happy to purchase a different model off of Amazon.

3A great performer for the price...with some reservations
By Ted Augustyn
After LOTS of research by me, this unit made the short list of three selected on the basis of aethetics by my partner. Online reviews ranked this LG model almost as well as the Sharp R-530ES, but the LG was almost $100 less. The 2 year warranty was ultimately the deal clincher. Thus far we haven't used every feature, but have used it enough to learn it's 20% more powerful than our (now deceased) KitchenAid microwave, and heats items very evenly. My partner is less than happy about the degree of doneness for autocooking bacon (preferring crispier bacon than I), but I think it's perfect, and much more consistent than our old KitchenAid, which delivered bacon anywhere from barely cooked to almost black.I really appreciate the curved cavity, as one of the problems we had with our KitchenAid was our maid's tendancy to wipe the corners with a damp rag and then close the door, causing both corners to rust over time. I also appreciate the greater capacity and larger turntable, allowing simultaneous reheating of several dishes. Thus far, I think we have a winner!===== UPDATE AFTER USING FOR 6 MONTHS ====After working flawlessly for 6 months, I went to open the door and it wouldn't open. It turns out the inside of the door MELTED to the lip of the interior. It took the LG-authorized repair shop one month to determine it could not be fixed, and, after a bit of a hassle with LG reps, they shipped a new one. This one has a bit of a fit and finish issue, as it won't latch if you push the lower part of the door and not the top. I'm holding my breath now...
