4Very Good but not perfect
By I. Peters
I bought this vacuum because I had gotten more than tired of having to replace my main vacuum every 2 years or so. Being originally from Germany, I was very familiar with the Miele brand and liked their excellent reputation. Here are some points with regards to the Capricorn:The Good:1. Excellent suction.I am not exaggerating when I say that my carpets look much cleaner than before after having used this vacuum on them. Even my husband noticed and like most men, he is not exactly observant when it comes to this kind of thing. The suction can be adjusted right there at the handle, no need to bend down.2. Quiet.Even with the motorized power brush on this vacuum is fairly quiet. No, you cannot have a phone conversation when this is running and you probably can't follow your favorite TV show while vacuuming but I still felt that it is a lot quieter than the average upright.3. Convenience.- It has specialty tools on-board so that there is no need to go back to the storage room to grab the upholstery brush, etc. With the pressing of a button the top lid on the canister opens and there are three tools neatly stored. Not like it is with other vacuums where some of these smaller tools are stored in the handle and have a tendency to fall off frequently. This here actually works.- The vacuum turns on and off at the handle. Also the motorized power brush turns off automatically when it is left in the locked upright position thus preventing damage to carpets from the brush rotating in place while it is not moved.- The power cable rolls up into the canister by depressing a foot pedal. Finally having to manually roll up cables on uprights is a thing of the past!4. Overall Quality.- This is a quality appliance, with the high quality apparent in the materials used and even in such small details as the satisfying sound when the cable rolls up in the canister (I have had other vacuums where that sounded like the plastic housing was going to crack any moment when rolling up the cable). It is actually manufactured in Germany, not somewhere in Asia - the label on the underside of the canister says "Made in Germany".- Miele states on their website that they have strict quality standards to manufacture each and every appliance to a 20-year minimum product life standard. While obviously I cannot speak to the truth of this (having owned this vacuum only for a few months), I know that any Miele vacuum that is owned by family and friends in Germany has been working for 10+/15+ years, no exceptions that I know of. This makes me confident in that they mean what they say.- The vacuum bags. I admit it - I am looking forward to changing the vacuum bags on this baby! I have never before seen bags like these. The first time I opened the canister to check whether there was one installed already, I thought this was some permanent bag in which to put the actual paper vacuum bag. Not so. This WAS the actual bag. It is padded, coated, I don't know but it feels like not the tiniest dust particle would ever escape this bag once inside.Things that could be improved upon:1. The weight.Make no mistake - this is one substantial piece of equipment, especially with the motorized power brush attached. Pulling the canister behind me and at the same time pushing the heavy power brush when vacuuming deep-pile carpets is exhausting and comes close to a work-out. I guess the quality of the equipment does translate into heftier weight, but it would be great if the wheels worked smoother on deep carpet so that the pulling wouldn't be such a chore. I personally find that the canister stalls too often, especially when trying to reverse direction.2. The included floor brushes. This particular offer comes with both the motorized power brush and a parquet floor brush. I use the first one on carpet, the latter on hard wood or vinyl. What I would have loved to also see included is a smaller brush suitable for carpeted stairs. The power brush is too wide and too heavy to really use on stairs. It is possible to use it but not ideal. There is another brush available for that but it costs an additional 70 dollars or so. I really believe this should be included in the first place.Summary:Would I buy it again? Absolutely. I think this appliance does an excellent job getting my carpets as clean as they can possibly be. I love the convenience of operating it via the handle with no need to bend down. And I am a sucker for the overall quality feel. But if I had a say, I would improve a few things which to me, however, are minor enough to not deduct too many points.

5Miele vs Dyson
By The Honest Reviewer
I have been a Dyson user for years. I have the Hepa filters, the top of the line Dyson for pets. I have 2 cats, 1 wife and a daughter who all shed. I'm sick of hair stuck to me, the furniture, my clothes, my shoes....arrrgghhh!Research and lots more research kept me coming back to Miele. Then I found out you have to go to a store because the prices are fixed, so what's the point of buying online? Go to your local brick and mortar and you can at least get service close to home.I talked to my local guy and he sold me the Miele, but he couldn't adjust the price. But what he did do was throw in 3 brushes/attachments of my choice, extra bags, free yearly tune-ups/check-ups, and a lifetime warranty on the Meile Capricorn.I pulled the trigger and made the purchase.....now all I can say is "wow".Within a week, I had to replace the bag because it was full of hair! (gross)That was all the hair that the Dyson had left behind, hidden in the carpet and floors and probably the furniture too. My clothes no longer have hair floating off of them and I must say the carpet and furniture look much cleaner than before I bought the Miele. This vacuum is picking up the dirt that the Dyson had left behind. The operation of this Miele is simple and easy to use. It is not heavy, but it is substantial and solid. Very quiet, and I use it to clean out my car too. Works so well everywhere throughout the household. Quality personified.Pros: I own it. Easy to use, very quiet.Cons: The price will stop you for a second...but you get what you pay for and I think I got MORE than I paid for here. Don't mind spending the money if the value is present and this Miele Capricorn is my last vacuum.

5Easy on the Back with the Added Bonus of Being Quiet...
By delicateflower152
As I approach the "new 40," I am discovering my lower back does not handle using an upright vacuum as painlessly as it formerly did. For the past two years, I have researched and read in an attempt to find a canister vacuum which I might actually like and which would not cause my lower back to ache. After I spent one night laying on the floor in an attempt to relieve the pain in my back - caused by an overly ambitious cleaning frenzy - I became serious about the quest for a vacuum to replace my Hoover Wind Tunnel upright. I have simply hated the Wind Tunnel which is awkward, heavy, requires repeated belt changes, and is extraordinarily noisy. After reading the reviews on Amazon, I decided the Miele Callisto was the right machine for me. I wasn't thrilled about spending so much on a vacuum cleaner, but the reviews on lower priced brands were not positive. I had saved some "mad money" over the years and, because I couldn't justify using household funds for a want which was not really a need, I dug into those.I like to see an item which is this expensive before I purchase it and found three local Miele dealers. I visited the closest to my home; the salesman there told me I didn't want the Callisto but did want the Capricorn because it had rubberized paint which would not damage my furniture. He never asked about what types of floors on which I would be using the vacuum or about the composition of our household. I called the second dealer who proceeded to put the phone down, leaving me listening while he talked with someone in the store - I hung up after patiently waiting for 5 minutes. The third dealer was 25 miles from our home, but was the type of retailer one expects to find handling this expensive machine. After learning our floors are half plush carpet and half tile or hardwood, the salesman suggested I look at the Capricorn. The head on the Callisto was not a powered unit, and he said I would feel like I was pushing a Mack truck across the floor. The separate SEB236 head costs over $200, which would bring the Callisto's cost in line with the Capricorn. Further, there are some features on the Capricorn that were nice to have, so I settled on that model. Because the price of Miele's is the same at all authorized dealers, whether internet or local, we decided to purchase locally from this store. At this point, I am glad I purchased the Miele Capricorn. It seems to be well made; even the SEB236 power head feels sturdy. The unit is relatively light, extremely maneuverable, and seems to have significant suction power. Unlike the wheels on older canister vacuums, the wheels on the Miele Capricorn swivel. In my opinion, this makes the unit equivalent in maneuverability to a Dyson. Further, the user bangs into corners and gets caught on furniture far less often than happened when using older, less agile canister vacuums. The power head can be laid almost flat and allows one to actually vacuum under chairs and tables without having to move them. All the floor utensils have a swivel-joint feature which enables one to get into tight spots simply by turning the wrist and swiveling the attachment. This is a great feature as I can get close to the baseboards and will no longer have to "redust" with a Swiffer as I had to when using the hard floor attachment on the Wind Tunnel. The bags and filters are easy to change and require no struggle as the Wind Tunnel bags did to install. I had no discomfort in my lower back after vacuuming the entire house using the Miele; the ability to extend the length of the wand which attaches to the various heads is significant in that one can find the length which provides the most comfortable range for the individual user. My only complaint is that the cord is a bit shorter than I'm used to, requiring me to have to switch plugs six times instead of my usual three. However, I suspect that making it longer would have required a larger canister and would have had an impact on the unit's size and maneuverability, so I'd rather switch plugs than sacrifice agility. And yes, the Miele Capricorn S5981 is quiet. Unlike the times I was using my Hoover Wind Tunnel, I can actually hear the telephone ring when I'm using my Miele. I no longer feel like my hearing is being severely compromised or that I might be missing an important call. The unit isn't silent, but it is far quieter than any other vacuum I've used.If you have the money to spend on an expensive vacuum, I highly recommend the Miele Capricorn S5981 with the SEB236 power head.
