The Friedrich SS12N10 Kühl Room Air Conditioner

Kühl DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Kühl is innovation, style and technology. From design to engineering, construction to control, Kühl is the most advanced room air conditioner ever produced.

The ENERGY STAR® qualified Kühl SS12 is designed to cool rooms up to 550 sq. ft. and can be used both in your window or for through-the-wall applications.

You can now operate your Kühl on the go from wherever you are using a smartphone, computer or tablet via FriedrichLink.* Take control with built-in energy management schedules as well as the ability to customize multiple 7-day programs* to fit your lifestyle. And, Kühl is the first Smart Grid enabled room air conditioner.

Kühl has been engineered for quiet, yet powerful operation. Extra thick rubber motor mounts absorb vibration and reduce noise inside, while steel inner walls and extra dense insulation block outdoor noise. Kühl's 8-way air flow systems offer precise air distribution which means faster cooling when you need it most.

Kühl incorporates high-end materials like heavy-gauge galvanized steel, rifled copper tubing, and high-tech aluminum fins. Kühl also uses the most durable components to extend the life of your air conditioner, including fully enclosed fan motors that seal out dirt, and powerful, energy-efficient compressors, which make Kühl as tough an air conditioner as we’ve ever built.

Kühl’s streamlined modern design in Cool Grey can blend in with any décor. Or coordinate a look that complements your space by using any of the six colored front covers (sold separately) including Deep Red, Cobalt Blue, Pink Diamond, Classic Beige, Black Onyx and Designer White.

*Requires optional Friedrich Link Wi-Fi Adapter Accessory, sold separately

4Cool and Quiet
By Tim Johnson
After an intense heat wave (3 straight days of 95+ degree heat), I realized my 9 yr. old Friedrich Quietmasterwasn't exactly quiet (or cool) any more. My old AC compressor was running like a freight train, and whenyour AC is challenging the TV for living room audio supremacy, it's time to replace it.The problem: How do I replace my AC with minimal modification to the current window cabinet setup?Fortunately, I found this Friedrich Kuhl which replaced my old Friedrich Quietmaster 12K BTU like a charm. In fact, it fits perfectly into the existing cabinet so I didn't even have to use the brand new metal cabinet thatcame with the Kuhl.So far, I've been pleased with the Kuhl. The TV volume no longer has to be set at Concert Blast leveleven when the AC is on. The Kuhl cools like it name says. In addition, there's an additional WiFidongle that can be purchase so the AC can be controlled .via your smartphone. The WiFi was not availableyet, so I've yet to try to that out, but I'm looking forward to it.

5As close to central AC as you can get
By EML
Let's face it - window ACs are noisy. I made the mistake of replacing my bedroom Friedrich with a Frigidaire and it is ridiculously noisy. So when my 6 year old friedrich died I decided to replace it with this model. It is the 'rolls Royce' of window ACs. Expensive yes but worth every penny. It is super quiet and as close to central AC as you can get. Looks nice too. Can also be operated remotely from your iPhone.

1Not so Kuhl...
By Jason E
I bought this unit b/c I wanted a solidly build (hopefully American made), high quality, quiet, window a/c that would last more than the typical 2-4 years that I get from most lower priced units. This unit is my second Kuhl. Oddly the predecessor to this one (an 8k btu Kuhl that I cannot recall model # for) that was purchased and installed in 2011 continues to work much more consistently and effectively than the SS12N10 (12k btu) that I upgraded to in 2012. For reference I am cooling a 450 sq ft space with this unit. The good:Looks nice. Seems well built. Certainly generally better than your typical $300 a/c. It seems to produce a reasonable amount of cool air, but less so than I'd expect from a 12k btu unit. It operates quietly, although for Friedrich's claims of noise reduction on this significantly more expensive unit I don't find it significantly more quiet. Annoyingly the somewhat complicated method used to direct airflow actually makes noise (rattles) on lower fan speeds...apparently b/c there are so many small parts to it (?).The bad:I liked the idea of "Friedrich-Link" which was supposed to provide the ability to control my unit via my iPad/iPhone/PC...but this part of the product still barely works and only intermittently through one of the worst interfaces (apps) I've ever seen. The fancy electronics/temp-control for this unit simply don't work. Since day 1 - regardless of how low I have the temp set-point - the unit has a habit of shutting itself off at +/-75 degrees. I've tried to address this by lowering the set-point to its lowest setting (60-degrees) to no avail...my $1000 a/c will simply not cool below +/-75 for any reason...this is irrespective of outside air temp.I was under the impression that the condenser would/should continue to operate until it reaches the set-point and not arbitrarily shut off at some higher temp. I've spoken to customer service repeatedly and while they have been friendly they don't have any ability to address the issue. I have had a technician come to my apt and review it. Unfortunately he was not able to address the issue with regard to the electronics. I will continue to work to address this with Friedrich but it is my advice that you consider a different line (not Kuhl) or a different company all together. Again maybe I got a bad unit but I've seen several other reviews of this unit that were not all wine and roses. Finally: I noticed that Consumer Reports has not ranked this model anywhere in its A/C review. This line has been out now for 3-4 years so that they have not been reviewed by CR is something that makes one think twice.
