Nice features, but design could be better
By Nyssa
Amana Washer NTW4700YQ' Pros:* Traditional Style design that should not develop mold* Choice of water levels selected by you not a computer* Has both a delicate cycle and a hand wash cycle that work really well* 4 water temperatures* Load balancing feature' Cons:* Rinse does not remove soap - a second rinse is required, and it can't be pre- programmed.* Very noisyLength of wash cycle: 50-55 minutes depending on cycle choice; rinse only -25 minutesI chose to buy this model because it was the only one I could find that had a traditional agitator and had a delicate cycle and hand wash cycle. After much reading at consumer reports and elsewhere online, I concluded that all front loaders and some high efficiency top loaders developed mold problems. My washer repair technician told me that no brand of front loader was free of the mold issue and he did not recommend the top loaders with no agitator. Research online confirmed his view on the top loaders - complaint after complaint of clothes not getting into the washer water and coming out dry with the dirt still on them.My previous washer (Kenmore) had a hand wash cycle that swished intermittently that I used for bras and blouses out of sheer fabrics. I didn't want to lose that and this Amana NTW4700YQ was the only "traditional everything" washer that I found that had this feature. It turned out to be much more gentle than my Kenmore and I am very pleased with its delicate and hand wash features. I have used the casual cycle and regular cycle as well and my clothes are coming out clean. Two problems with this machine: Most of the cycles say (in the manual) "features a spray rinse". What that means is that after your clothes wash, they get spritzed a couple of times and spun and then they come out with soap spots on them. No cycle on this machine has a rinse that removes detergent, so after your load finishes you have to turn the dial to the special rinse only cycle and do a second rinse. There is no way to start your machine and leave the house and have it go on and do the second rinse without your being there to set it manually. Further, if you want a second rinse on delicate things with delicate agitation, the only solution is to re-run the delicate wash cycle without detergent. I let the machine fill with water, swish for a short time, and then cancel the cycle and turn the dial to drain and spin. (FYI I am using less detergent than ever before, filling the scooper to below the lowest line, and it's the famous brand that begins with "T" not some cheap store brand.)The other problem, and since every other washer on the market has this, you can't really hold it against Amana, is that the lid locks during the entire washing cycle. Yes, it is possible to push a button and get it to stop, but you have to wait, and you can't ever look at what the washer is doing when it is washing. (I suppose this is a really important feature for those high efficiency washers that never wet the clothes on top. You can't catch it in the act.) If anyone could invent and market a device for plugging into the lid insertion point and outsmarting the lid lock feature, they would have a large market of buyers. One comment: I did hit the stop button and open up the washer and it fills very full. I have been washing most of my large loads on medium water level. The large water level fills to the very top of the drum. My old washer never filled this full. NTW4700YQ is not at all efficient with water use, but I consider that a plus. The minimal use of water is part of what leads to the mold problems. On the other hand, it tries to save water on the rinse, but of course, you will need to do a full rinse by filling the drum with water to get the soap out.I consider the cons to this machine really annoying, however I would still choose to buy this model because it appears to be the only washer on the market that isn't a stripped down model without any features while at the same time isn't completely given over to the new and problematic high efficiency design.I have owned this washer for 3 months. I did not purchase it from Amazon. I ordered it through a local appliance store that sells Amana products. No store in my area actually carried this model.

Hose alert
By Ekonokat
The washing machine works great, but beware, it does not come with a hose(s) to connect, so make sure you order a washer hose or have one on hand or you won't be able to use it!

Good performance at a reasonable price
By Eurocat
This is exactly the washer we needed. It is easy to use, performs well and is priced reasonably. The capacity if fine for us. However, note we are a couple and not a large family. I highly recommend it for singles and/or smaller families.
