4Reasonable long slot toaster
By Mr E
This review is for the waring wct 704. Its being sold with a wide range of price, also rebadged as conair. For 15+ years we've been buying toasters from garage sales since we can't find new models that meet our needs. This wct704 appears to exceed them, and looks to be a well made toaster. We prefer the long slot toaster. For a nice wide loaf you can keep the slice intact instead of having to chop it down to fit the toast slot. Wide dual slots you can toast 4 bagel slices at once. The lever on the side can be pushed quite high to lift bread clear. The bar that holds the bottom of the slice is wide and well supported from both sides. Each slot has a fairly dense cage of vertical wire to cradles the bread while its toasted, this keeps the bread aligned between the elements, and ensures it will actually exit the slot instead of getting stuck inside like our terrible "Toastation" experiment (go ahead, search for toastation). There is a cancel button which I believe is important since we broke our last good toaster by forcing it to pop (with no cancel its either that or unplug it).The heating elements are tiny filiments threaded through a board, many small elements means the toasting is very even.I expected the metal surface to get hot but its not as bad as those solid metal toasters from the '50s.Toaster is black plastic and chrome. Plasic is that tough heat resistant stuff. Controls have a nice feel, especially the solid round toast-setting. I've not tried the "defrost" and "reheat" buttons, there are lights behind the buttons that light up.Finally, a comment about toasting quality: I suppose everyone has an ideal piece of toast in mind. My wife likes bread to be evenly toasted. To me the toast from this machine is a little too even and sort of boring. I think good bread tastes better with an uneven toast.

4My second one.

I bought this toaster in 2006. At that time is was a Cusinart model CPT90. It still works but the electronics are cutting down the juice to the ribbons so they are not getting as hot and it takes longer to get the toast done. Time for a new one. As I liked all the features of this toaster & felt it's longevity was fairly good I wanted another one. Cusinart quit carrying them in 2008 but Waring took over with the model WCT704. I was glad to find I could still get one as there were no problems other than explained above with the CPT90.The only difference between them is the WCT704 does not have a switch to turn off one outer bank of ribbons for one sided bagel toasting or when only using one side for toast. It must have created voltage/amp issues like I was experiencing so it is now gone.I gave 4 stars because I would like one slot to have one sided heat at times. However you might have noticed there are very few 4 star toasters on Amazon so this one is a winner. Oh yea, I didn't buy the WCT704 here. I just bought a new one on eBay and kept $30 in my pocket.Hilditch

5Very good toaster, no frills & no problems
By doktorbuzzo
I just bought this exact toaster, it was a "made in China" model, Waring branded. I've been using it for about one week so far and it's exactly as I'd hoped. The exterior is beautiful and the controls are easy to understand. The cord is extremely heavy and the plug is securely attached. This is good: toasters draw high current and a thick cord will be less likely to cause trouble or become damaged over years of use. I don't think the cord cleats on the bottom of the toaster are solid enough to withstand the weekly movement of the toaster for cleaning, so I'm not using them. Instead the wire is coiled neatly and bound with the supplied wire-tie. For a heavy cord it is flexible enough to keep it out of the way when the unit is plugged in.I've toasted two categories of bread with this. Generally I've found the middle-level setting of 3.5 on the scale from 1 to 6 is adequate for my tastes. I'd rather have my toast a bit underdone than a bit overdone, YMMV if you are more particular or exacting in your requirements. With frozen (just out of the freezer) whole-wheat hamburger buns, I get a nice dark brown result on both the inside and outside surfaces of the bun, and the toasted buns are still tender & moist inside. (Remember to press the control to select frozen items after starting the toast.) Nothing worse than a toasted but too-dry bun that comes apart when eaten. With defrosted but cool (from the fridge) bagels (not real New York bagels, don't get me started...), the same 3.5 gives a light brown toast to the inside and outside surfaces. For those who prefer only one side of the bagel toasted, this isn't the toaster for you, as it has no special setting for that mode of bagel toasting. Again, YMMV.What I particularly like is that I can toast two of everything with the extra-long slots, which cuts down on prep time. I also like that I can see into the unit as it operates, so if something's ready before the normal toast cycle completes, just pressing the cancel button stops toasting immediately. Toasted items pop up so they're visible above the top of the unit (thus not easily forgotten). I typically use the lever to raise items an additional 2 to 2.5 inches or so, which makes removal a snap, no tongs necessary. Don't be a rube, wait a few minutes for everything to cool down. You won't burn your fingers & the toast won't get soggy on the bottom from sitting in its own steam on a much cooler plate. Relax & enjoy your toast in a few minutes!Cleaning the crumb tray is easy, although the tray is small and could probably become bent or damaged if carelessly handled or dropped. I've cleaned the tray once so far, it was easy to remove and to reinstall. I used a damp cloth & warm water in the sink - I don't think putting the tray in the dishwasher is a good idea.As other reviewers have noted, there's a bit of a burning electronics or plastic smell when the unit is new. After the first use, this went away completely. Since then I've not smelled anything other than nice hot toast, and I'm particularly sensitive to the smell of an electrical or electronic material burning. As I continue to use this toaster, I'll update this review. But after one week of daily use, so far, so great!
