Good choice so far

I purchased this a/c after doing much investigation. I have had it set up and working for two days now and am pretty happy. It is nothing fancy, but has some good features and puts out nice cold air. there is a drain plug that is higher than most (center of the unit). I looked for this in the event the auto evaporation did not work i can drain it out the window. We'll see if i need it and if it works.Anyway, some people complain about the noise. The compressor kicking on will take some getting used to at night. But any review that complains of the noise- well imagine your oustide air conditioner sitting next to you in a smaller package, yeah its noisy. But its not so bad you dont get used to it.anyway thus far its a good a/c unit.**Update July 14, 2013--So this window unit has done an excellent job of cooling our upstairs bedroom. It is located above a two car uninsulated garage. About two weeks ago in the middle of the night the unit shut off. Too tired to look into I found out the water bucket had filled up. I emptied it (about 1 liter) and ran it the next night. It again filled and shut off. The humidity levels during this time were high. Chicago summers.Decided that it was time to put the higher drain plug to use. I originally put it on a platform and was going to run the hose out the window. But then decided to run the hose into a 5 gallon bucket. Each night we turn the unit on around 7pm and off around 7am. the bucket is usually over half full. probably about three gallons. crazy. but it works great.I would buy this for the higher drain plug- it would be a pain to have to constantly drain it from a ground level drain.

Bought on amazon for $434.00. We have a large two bedroom apartment and the old living room unit was just not doing the job. This new unit by Whynter cools my 300 square ft. apartment room extremely well. It was a little louder than expected at first. This is probably because of the creaky floor. I ended up making a small stand using dense Styrofoam with a piece of plywood on top. It produces a level of sound similar to our old living room unit, but with better cooling power. Definitely recommended, especially for people who cannot have window units.

I purchased Whynter 13,000 Btu ARC-131GD Dual Hose Eco-Friendly Portable Air Conditioner. The unit works great. I did not use the intake hose to bring in outside air to reduce humidity. I let the intake hose area and the carbon filter intake area bring in the air and exhaust the hot air out the window. By not bringing in humid outside air I have not needed to empty water from the unit yet. The unit is as noisy as my other portable units and puts out very cold air. I like the remote control unit that can sit on top of the unit or be removed to you current location. The unit was under 400.00 from Amazon with free shipping and no tax. I would recommend the unit as a 14,000 BTU portable. The higher drain plug is nice if you ever need to drain out the water from humid air. I do not use the outside intake hose to reduce the amount of humid air running into the unit. It seems to work fine like that. A little weather striping around the window inserts and you are all set. You can use duct tape for extra insulation around the window if necessary. I like the surge protector built into the grounded plug. Very satisfied for under 400.00.
